Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid is one of the most important cosmetic areas of one’s face. Over the years, aging leaves the first signs around the eye area, so blepharoplasty is the first treatment to combat aging for middle aged women (35-50 years) and quite often is done before a face lifting.

It is a procedure that pleases both the candidate and the surgeon since results are often impressive and predictable.

The best candidates for eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty is performed for people of any age, usually after the age of 20 (congenital cases), and in most cases for middle aged people.

For younger people is performed, if for instance baggy eyelids run in the family. These people appear to have puffy ‘bags’ in the lower part due to fat and excess skin. It appears like a curve in which the underlying tissue called ‘ orbital septum’ thins out and is unable to hold the fat.

As the eyelid skins stretches along with drooping upper lids and puffy bags, it provides a permanent ‘tired and depressed’ look, whereas other women start noticing that their eyes are becoming smaller. This is because the stretched skin drops over the eyes, thus affecting vision and size.

Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with the Doctor. You should know that eyelid surgery will not remove crow’s feet, or other wrinkles.

Blepharoplasty can be done alone, or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as face lifting, TCA peeling, laser etc.

Procedure

Eyelid surgery is usually performed under a local anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids, in the creases of your upper lids, and just below the lashes (1mm) in the lower lids. The sutures will be removed after 4-5 days and incisions are not visible after a while.

After the surgery

You can return home after the operation and the Doctor will instruct you to use cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising. Bruising varies from person to person but usually reduces after 3 days. We recommend antibiotics as a precaution and you should be able to be out and about straightway by wearing sun glasses, but back to normal life after 8-10 days.

Blepharoplasty is a simple process but needs to be selected and performed by qualified plastic surgeons for better and pleasing results.
